Austin is one of the best cities in Texas for public golf. The city operates six courses through Austin Parks & Recreation (GolfATX), ranging from a $18 nine-holer to a $65 daily-fee course. Green fees are low by any measure, courses are walkable, and tee times are usually available.
TrackPass members get 1 free round per year at each of these courses ($199/yr). If any join the TrackPass partner network, members get 2 rounds per year at that course.

1. Lions Municipal Golf Course
Austin's first public golf course and a Texas Historic Landmark. Built in 1924 on land donated to the city, Lions Muni sits in West Austin near the Colorado River — tree-lined, walkable, and deeply tied to Austin's golf identity. Ben Crenshaw learned the game here as a boy.
The course has been repeatedly threatened by development (the land was almost sold to UT in 2019), but Austin golfers have fought hard to keep it. As of 2026 it remains open and city-operated. If you're playing only one Austin muni, make it this one.
2. Hancock Golf Course
Built in 1899, Hancock is the oldest golf course in Texas. The nine holes wind through Central Austin on land that hasn't changed much in over a century. It's not a test for experienced golfers, but as a piece of Texas golf history it's unmatched.
At $18 for nine holes, Hancock is also the best-value round in Austin. Great for beginners, kids, or anyone who wants a quick loop without committing to a full 18. Walking only (no carts).
3. Riverside Golf Course
East-of-downtown muni where Texas golf legends Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite first learned the game together as juniors. Set along the Colorado River with mature trees framing most holes. The greens are small and can be tricky — locals know to read them carefully.
Riverside is often the most affordable of the city munis after Hancock. It draws a loyal local crowd and doesn't get the same tourist attention as Lions, which means tee times are easier to come by.
4. Morris Williams Golf Course
Northeast Austin muni with a unique routing and several holes that offer glimpses of the downtown skyline. One of the longest of the city-operated courses and a favorite among locals who want more distance than Lions or Riverside offers.
Conditions at Morris Williams are generally consistent for a city-run course. The practice facility is the best of the GolfATX system — good range and short-game area.
5. Roy Kizer Golf Course
Austin's links-style muni — open, treeless, and breezy. Roy Kizer plays very differently from Austin's other munis. Wide fairways, exposed to wind, with natural terrain shaping the holes instead of trees. South Austin location near Slaughter Creek.
Often in the best shape of any GolfATX course due to its open design making drainage and turf management easier. The $42 green fee is slightly higher than its siblings, but the course quality reflects it.
6. Jimmy Clay Golf Course
The companion course to Roy Kizer at the same South Austin facility. Jimmy Clay is slightly more forgiving than Kizer — a bit more tree cover and a layout that's friendlier for mid-to-high handicappers. Same open, links-influenced feel but a bit more room to miss.
Both courses are operated by GolfATX (Austin Parks & Recreation). Greens fees and tee time booking are at the same facility desk. If Roy Kizer is booked, Jimmy Clay is almost always available the same day.
7. Avery Ranch Golf Club
The only private-daily-fee option on this list. Avery Ranch is a well-maintained 18-hole course in the northern Austin suburbs (Cedar Park / Avery Ranch neighborhood). Better bunkering and more consistent conditioning than the city munis, with a full clubhouse and practice facilities.
At $65, it's the priciest of Austin's public options but competes well against similar daily-fee tracks in the market. Popular with north Austin residents who don't want to drive south for a round.
