San Antonio Public Golf Courses, Reviewed

Last updated June 2026 · 6 min read

San Antonio operates seven public golf courses through the City Parks and Recreation Department. The system has real breadth — a historic course in Brackenridge Park, a destination-quality layout at Mission del Lago, and five neighborhood munis spread across the city. Here's the honest breakdown.

#1 Best history and character

Brackenridge Park Golf Course

Green fee: ~$35 Holes: 18 Opened: 1916

The oldest public golf course in Texas, designed by A.W. Tillinghast. Brackenridge is a genuine piece of Texas golf history — mature live oaks, the San Antonio River running through the course, and a layout that has character that no modern muni can replicate. It's been maintained respectfully and is the first choice for golfers who prioritize course personality over conditioning perfection.

#2 Best modern layout

Mission del Lago Golf Course

Green fee: ~$38 Holes: 18

Mission del Lago is considered the best-conditioned course in the SA city system and the one local golfers take guests to when they want to impress. Water features throughout, elevated tee boxes, and greens that roll true. It's a more modern layout than Brackenridge but consistently delivers a quality experience.

Cedar Creek Golf Course

Green fee: ~$32 Holes: 18

Cedar Creek is on the northwest side and the go-to for golfers in that part of the city. Well-maintained, solid layout, and consistently good pace of play. It doesn't get the prestige of Brackenridge or Mission del Lago but it's a reliable round every time. Particularly good for afternoon tee times when the heat breaks.

Olmos Basin Golf Course

Green fee: ~$28 Holes: 18

Olmos Basin is in the heart of the city, surrounded by the Olmos Basin flood control project. It plays through a unique landscape — more open than the other SA courses, windier, and with a distinct feel. Good value for the area, and the flat terrain makes it a good walking course if you prefer to walk and carry.

Northern Hills Golf Course

Green fee: ~$26 Holes: 18

Northern Hills rounds out the major SA public courses on the north end of the city. Consistent, affordable, practical. If you're near Loop 1604 on the north side, this is your local option and it delivers a solid round of golf for the price.
